Common Lawn Pests in St. Louis
These are the insects I see most often destroying lawns in our area.
White Grubs
Beetle larvae that feed on grass roots. Cause brown patches that pull up easily because roots are destroyed.
Signs to look for: Brown patches, spongy turf, animals digging at lawn
Chinch Bugs
Tiny insects that suck sap from grass blades, causing yellowing and death. Thrive in hot, dry conditions.
Signs to look for: Irregular yellow patches that spread, especially along driveways
Sod Webworms
Caterpillars that chew grass blades at night. Create small brown patches that gradually expand.
Signs to look for: Small brown patches, moths flying low over lawn at dusk
Armyworms
Caterpillars that march across lawns eating everything in their path. Can devastate a lawn in days.
Signs to look for: Rapidly spreading bare patches, visible caterpillars
Why Professional Treatment
Big-box store products often fail because they're applied at the wrong time or for the wrong pest.
Diagnosis Included
Not every brown patch is insects. I'll identify the real cause — sometimes it's disease, irrigation, or soil issues, not pests.
Safe for Pets & Family
Treatments dry quickly and are safe for children and pets once dry. I'll give you specific instructions.
Timing Matters
Different pests have different lifecycles. I treat at the optimal time for maximum effectiveness.
Follow-Up Care
Some infestations need multiple treatments. I'll create a plan and monitor results.
What to Expect
A straightforward process to identify your problem and fix it.
Inspection
I examine your lawn to identify the specific pest and assess the extent of damage. Not every brown spot is insects — I'll tell you what's really going on.
Treatment
I apply targeted treatment based on the pest identified. This may be a surface application or a soil treatment, depending on where the pest lives.
Recovery Plan
I'll advise on watering and care to help your lawn recover, and schedule follow-up if needed.
Timing Is Everything
The best time to treat depends on the pest and its lifecycle.
Spring
April - May
Preventive grub treatment is most effective when applied before beetles lay eggs. Also treat for chinch bugs as temperatures rise.
Summer
June - August
Monitor for chinch bugs and sod webworms. Curative grub treatment if you missed the spring window.
Fall
September - October
Treat active grub populations before they dig deeper for winter. Address armyworm outbreaks.
Not sure when to treat? Call me and I'll assess your specific situation.
It's Not Always Insects
Brown patches in your lawn can have many causes — and spraying for insects when the real problem is something else is a waste of money.
Common non-insect causes include:
- Fungal diseases (brown patch, dollar spot)
- Irrigation problems (too much or too little water)
- Soil compaction
- Dog urine damage
- Chemical burns from fertilizer or herbicides
When you call me, I'll tell you what's really going on — even if it's not something I treat.
The Grub Test
Want to check for grubs yourself? Here's a simple test:
- 1. Cut three sides of a 1-foot square section of turf
- 2. Peel back the sod like opening a lid
- 3. Count the white, C-shaped grubs in the soil
- 4. More than 10 grubs per square foot = treatment needed
Not comfortable doing this yourself? I'll do it during my inspection.
